I used to have an F150 Ecoboost and actually MUCH preferred that engine to the 5.0 V8. The Ecoboost had more power and made it down low; the V8 was more sluggish off the line and didn't accelerate as well once you got going. Plus, the turbo will make more consistent power at high altitude.
The Ecoboost "COULD' have condensation issues from the intercooler, and valve carbon fowling from the direct injection. The Condensation issues can cause the truck to go into limp mode under heavy throttle conditions in humid or wet conditions. Worst case, it could damage the catalytic converters. The valve fowling could damage your turbos when the carbon deposits break loose. You have to break down the engine to clean this so that carbon isn't broke free. This is all documented very well on the F150Forum. My dealer was aware of this as well and the 5.0L was the more reliable engine.
I've driven both and much prefer the 5.0L. The Ecoboost does have turbo lag though less significant the more the engine is loaded up or at speeds. The turbo lag (hesistation) off the line is what I disliked the most. I was not wowed by the Ecoboost at all. The turbo lag was a big disappointment considering how Ford said with the twin turbos, this would almost be eliminated. It was on all of the 3 testers I drove, noticeably. I liked the 5.0L responsiveness and it always goes immediately when you hit the gas. It is always is in the right gear for strong power. I didn't feel it was deficient next to the Ecoboost at all especially when the turbos weren't spooled up or had turbo lag.
Each to their own but the 5.0L is one hek of a tow engine.
