For 6 months I would just buy used.
For me my commute was using so much gas in the F150 that I ended up trading it for a Prius, and now the payments + gas total less than just the gas did in the truck alone. We then bought an older truck to tow the camper with so we could still enjoy it. I am terrified owning cars outside of warranty because I've had major repairs on most of them, but we didn't pay much for this thing, and it's been super reliable so far.
You don't have to go far back, but look at a 3/4 ton because for a 6 month trip you'll probably be hauling more than weekender. Peace of mind is really a good thing.
