I don't disagree with what you're saying.
To be honest I don't want a truck at all. They're terrible daily drivers and the only reason I'm buying one is for this 6 month trip. Upon our return we'll probably sell the trailer as we don't camp often, but i'll still be left with a truck. I'd prefer something smaller, 1/2 ton size if required over the larger 3/4 ton. I also like Toyota better than domestic. Alternatively I buy a 3/4 ton and sell it when we return as well. Its just not to friendly on the wallet to unload a bunch of newly purchased items 6 months later.

FWIW, the Tundra gets worse gas mileage than many 3/4 ton trucks. If you're going to be using the truck as a daily driver after your trip, you may wish to consider the fact that a Silverado/Sierra or F150 will get 21+mpg day in and day out, unloaded, and you will have a payload capacity over 2,000 lbs with an extended cab.
Guess you haven't looked at the real life gas mileage that people are getting and posting on Fuelly.com. F150 gets 14-18 no where near 21+. Sierra gets 15-19, Silverado 14-18. Tundra 14-18. None are anywhere near 21+ and imagine that they are all around the same 14-18 average real world driving.
Lots of Tundra haters make comments like it's a gas hog, not a real 1/2 ton and blah, blah blah. It would be nice to get facts though. By your comments I guess the Silverado/Sierra and F150 get worse mileage than a 3/4 ton too. You can look those up on Fuelly.com too and see the difference. Mileage numbers posted by auto manufacturer are no indication of real world mileage but Fuelly is pretty close.
