Is my toilet defective?

I am not sure if my toilet is defective or its operator error...
When ever the handle is pulled to let water in the flush hatch at the bottom opens, which prevents any substantial amount of water to accumulate in the bowl. Even when care is taken to slightly move the lever.
All the toilets I have had experience with allows one to somewhat fill the bowl prior to flushing?

am I missing something??

  • Most RV toilets (at least the ones I have been around) allow you to add water to the bowl by pushing/pulling on the flush lever slightly. The water will flow but the gate will not open (or opens just a crack). If you push/ pull a little harder then the gate will open and the toilet flushes.
  • That's the way they're supposed to work, made to save the most water. You should have just a small amount left in the bowl to make a water/odor seal. If you want more water just move the lever in the other direction. That's the way nearly all rv toilets work.
