Is OnStar protecting your vehicle??

This is probably an anomaly but OnStar sure didn't do much for this guys GM car..

ONSTAR FAIL

Wonder if they will refund his $250 he paid for the service?

If you have a $60,000 tow vehicle you may want to just pull breaker for fuel system instead of counting on this?:W

So, you found another "negative" public story related to GM. Must be raining in Florida so you have to surf.

Like any protection device, criminals will work to learn how to disable. There was no timeline to indicate how long the vehicle was gone. The story indicates that they had a location, and then went out. These criminals must have learned where the device is located, and had time to work to disable.

Maybe V10 should go look for some positive Ford stories to post.

    Take it easy..
I was reading the Canadian news and came across this and found it thought some may find it good info to know if they were counting on OnStar as protection.
Was not intended as "negative" unlike many of your posts.. In fact I even said is probably an anomaly. I never heard of this before..
    Did you?
You can go back to 2002 when I joined and find very few "negative" posts I started if any, unlike some on here.

But be assured there sure are a LOT of them out there if someone wanted to post them.. I know you would know this.

As far as finding and posting positive Ford posts, there are lots of those also but I'm not interested as I know you would be posting within the first 10 to balance it with something negative. I read enough of your stuff without opening the door to more. :R
I an just going to enjoy the rest of the day now.

Why is it, that the government tracking your cell phone position and usage is a terrible thing, but having Onstar so that they know where your vehicle is every hour of every day is wonderful?
Well for one thing, me parking my OnStar car in front of your house wouldn't indicate any ill intentions.
On the other hand, my cell phone in your bedroom while you are away might have you re-examining your wife's fidelity.
However, I do see your point.

  • We had OnStar on two vehicles. The first one was totalled and automatically coordinated EMS response for my wife. Then we had it on the Acadia, which we never touched.

IIRC the system uses the cell towers, but have higher power transmitters for better range. It can still be defeated by terrain though.

I imagine if you cut the cable to the antenna it would be effectively disabled though.
  • According to into I read, they use cellular for communications, and GPS satellites for location.
  • I had On-Star when we purchased each of our vehicles for the standard 1 year (or whatever) when you purchase a new vehicle. Never used it on 3 different vehicles, let it expire and never looked back. I personally wish all the On-Star stuff was never on my vehicles. Occasionally I hit the button when flipping the mirror to night-mode. I hate that stupid thing!
  • Based on their advertising you would think it would work anywhere.
  • Is OnStar protecting your vehicle??

    NO NO and NO.

True personal story NOT one found on the internet.

Friends 78 year old mother snowbirds thru the mountains every year "SOLO".

Daughter made sure she bought a toad with OnStar to MAKE SURE she could get help immediately in case of an emergency.

She hit a deer and crashed the toad on a remote stretch of road.

    OnStar DID NOT WORK.

OnStar uses towers the SAME AS YOUR PHONE.

NO phone service where you are at? NO Onstar help.

Many think it is satellite driven and will always work. Which is nothing further than the truth. IMHO they should be forced to be more transparent that it uses cell phone towers and that you CAN and WILL be with OUT service in an area that does not have a tower close enough to it.

Had this lady been more severely hurt it could have been a matter of life or death. :(
