Is this enough truck?

Hi all, I currently have the set up in my sig. What I am thinking of doing is replacing my current tow vehicle(she's gettin' tired.) I can get a good deal on a 2010 Toyota Tundra that tows 10,000. My camper is a 5er but only weighs 8,000 loaded(lightweight). Would this be a good combo or do I stick with a 2500? Any info is appreciated thanks.

  • Bad idea. The pin weight alone will use up all your payload and then some. I do see some people towing 5th wheels with half tons but it's something I'd never do.

Tundra owner here, and you should go with the 2500 with that 5er. You can get away with it with a TT but the 5er will put too much weight in the bed. Also, if the Tundra you're looking at is a Crew Max, it won't work at all as it will have 5.5 foot bed which Toyota does not recommend putting a 5er on, per their owners manual.
  • The others are correct. The truck has enough power to pull the camper. The issue is the payload. Check inside the driver's door pillar for the payload rating.

There are many people pulling fivers with Tundra's. Most have airbags and e rated tires. Still you'll likely be over your payload rating and it's not ideal.
  • Weigh your current setup. Payload is the limit, not tow rating or power. Few half tons have enough payload for 1200 pound minimum of pin weight, a 200 pound 5er receiver in the bed, and a people in the cab.

What? The Tundra has a 5.5 foot bed on Crewmax and either 6.5 or 8 foot bed on the regular and doublecab models. Having truthful specs makes for a better argument.

That being said... probably not. Not enough payload on most Tundras for the overwhelming majority of fifth wheels. You need to know your total pin weight for the fiver, weight for the hitch plus the weight of gear and passengers. You probably want a minimum of 2000 lbs payload for a fiver. You'll be lucky to have 1600 lbs in the Tundra, unless it is a regular cab 2wd.
  • I sure wouldn't do it. A buddy of mine has a new 2014 and although they are very nice rides, the suspension is a bit on the soft side. When he pulls my 4000lb bowfishing boat, you sure know its back there. Plus, isn't the payload around 1600lbs?
  • Not a good match. Tundra has only a 4-1/2 or 5 foot bed, making it extremely difficult when maneuvering. Couple that to the low load ratings and it is just not a really good towing platform for fifth wheels.
For your trailer one of the new 1/2 tons like the Ford Ecoboost with max towing package might be a good match. But is sure will not give you any room to grow in the near future.
