If you decide to go diesel and use it as a daily driver I would give the nod to trucks equipped with DEF.
Why? Having had a non-DEF truck for the last 12 years I have no experience with it and really haven’t kept up on the technology.
Understood... In the year range you listed some diesels had a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) only and those diesels ran a higher EGR duty cycle which means more carbon from the exhaust goes back thru the intake. Running a higher EGR duty cycle typically means worse fuel economy and more soot build in the intake, EGR valve, EGR cooler, which means more maintenance typically. In 2013 all manufacturers added DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) that reduced the EGR duty cycle and some of the negatives I listed above but does not entirely eliminate them. So if you run your truck mostly highway and pulling it's really not much of an issue either way, but if you use your truck as a daily driver and city drive a lot I would recommend making sure your DPF equipped diesel has DEF as well and get a bump in fuel economy as a bonus.
Good luck...
