I’ve got both, a diesel and now a gas burner. I absolutely love my van, but the cost of diesel repairs, we bought a truck. I’ve towed withe the van since we bought the trailer in May 2012 and had no issues. I love my van and love that it is DPF and DEF-free. I don’t like the fact injector replacement will cost $6000. With 250K on the clock, at some point I will need to replace equipment as a preventative measure, but on a vehicle that is declining in value, we made the decision to buy the truck.
The truck is a 2500 crew cab long (8’) bed, LT trim and 4-wheel drive. It has everything we (I) wanted and we got a great deal. We’ve towed a couple of times. Last September we went to Sequoia National Park, Flagstaff, and a couple other places.
You can’t beat the diesel for towing, but I won’t buy/own another. They’ve ruined diesel for me. The 6.0L is a powerhouse especially when mated to the 6 speed transmission and the 4.10 dif. It’s doing well. The good is that it’s not a diesel; the bad, it’s not a diesel. It does what we need it to do, with a little more revs, but with the same confidence and pretty good seat of the pants performance. Trailering, I got any where from 8 to 12 mpg. Unhooked, I average about 16 mpg. I’ve gotten better but 16 is the norm. It does seem to get better mileage at 70-75ish speeds.
I was looking at the Dodge/Ram with the 6.4L but I ended up getting a great deal in the Chevrolet. You won’t go wrong with either the Ram or Chevy. Good luck on your search!
