To the OP, knowing you're planning on, say, 10 years and 15k miles per year, that changes my thoughts a bit compared to an assumed 3k miles per year from your original post.
Consider a diesel for the grin factor as you said it. Only one grinning when pulling a big trailer with a gasser is the gas station owner! And the diesel will do better on mileage all around as well
At 6-10 years old trucks you said you'll be considering, definitely look for trucks with def. (2011-up Duramax/Powerstroke and 2013-up Cummins).
My preference would be generally Duramax in the early 2010s models of trucks.
