As someone who went from gas to diesel, I can say I am happy I did. Not only power, but much better pulling capability. I had a V10 and it was a gas hog, pulled well, I thought, until I got the diesel.
I have a 2015 Chev 2500 Diesel. I would definitely recommend the GM product, the engine and Alison transmission are a great pair. We mostly use our truck for pulling our 2 trailers. It has been great and very reliable. I would stay away from GM in the 2011 year as it was the first with the DEF. I have read that many had problems in the first year, so I would just stay away. You will probably find the 2011 year for less money but there is a reason. If you can afford the 2014, 2105 or so, you will be happy. 2015 was the first year of the model change so a larger interior and nice upgrades.
I'm sure you can find a nice truck with any of the 3 manufacturers, but my 2 cents is go diesel and go with a 1 ton.
