I understand the physics why shorter can be less stable than a longer TV but I towed my 26' boat on a probably 30' trailer since 2005 with 2 different Explorers (5.0L & 4.6L) that had ratings of 6600 and 7100 respectively. I pulled up steep ramps, drove through hot local traffic and went intrastate with the last one and even used it for my TT in signature once and it wasn't a white knuckle experience ever. During this time I also owned dedicated tow rigs (Suburban 2500's, V10 Excursion, C3500 DRW) that I also towed the boat trailer and there was an improvement in power and tail heftiness but the only one that felt substantially more stable was the DRW truck. Now I know the boat/trailer is more aerodynamic than a typical TT but my short wheel based Explorer was the vehicle of choice for the boat and I scaled it at 8K after 2 years of towing. I also am interested in the Jeep diesel, it seems like a perfect compromise in power and efficiency esp with some of the upgrades that are available. I guess it depends on one comfort level with the TV and the intended use whether it is occasional short distances or more long distances and full timing.
