As okan-star said, MPPT allows you to use higher voltages and smaller wire.
I am wiring up our system today which is 1080 watts and I am only using 10 gauge wire. During bulk charging, 45 amps could be going into our 24 volt battery bank. The four panels are wired 2s2p so roughly 80 volts at 14 amps is flowing over the 10AWG wire and the Midnite Classic 150 MPPT controller. The controller converts that to ~24V at 45 amps.
If you had 45 amps flowing over 40 feet round trip of 10AWG wire, you would lose 81 watts just in the wiring.
