JT's Strong Arm or U-F Eliminator installation question

I've been thinking about getting a set of the JT's Strong Arm or Ultra-Fab Eliminator stabilizers. These are the cross-members that go between the pad of a stab. jack and the underside of the frame at an angle to eliminate bounce and movement when the trailer is set up. We have an annoying amount of bounce even with bottle jacks ahead of the wheels. We have electric stab. jacks which are worse than scissor jacks for movement.

My question is, according to the manufacturer's instructions, you install four of the cross-members at the front of the trailer and two at the rear. But 4 at the front means you would have to crawl under the trailer to set them up. Is this really how it is? I can't imagine having to crawl under there every time you set up and break camp.

Is it not possible to install the cross-members at the rear of the trailer where you can reach them? I can't see a reason not to.

  • What has me wondering is how to tighten/loosen the T-handles on the front of a travel trailer with the A-frame in the way. The stab. jacks are set back from the A-frame a bit. I can see how it is easy on a fifth wheel because you can fully access them. It seems to me that there is no reason why you just can't put the 4 cross-members at the rear and then the front two would only be in the fore/aft direction and easily accessible.

I know about the T-handle extension tool but am not sure if this would be easy to use when reaching under the A-frame? Not getting younger and am trying to make things easier to do....

I have tried bottle jacks under the frame just ahead of the wheels and they help a lot. As Lynnmor says, we have an abnormally flexible frame which makes the bounce/movement sensation worse. We are expecting resolution to our frame issues in the not too distant future now.

I was thinking of replacing the Lippert elec. stab. jacks with ones made by Ultra-Fab. U-F claims theirs eliminates any movement but the design is pretty much the same as the Lippert one so I have decided against the U-F ones. The U-F ones would be over $1K to install and they *could* end up with the same movement as the Lippert ones.
  • I have a 5th wheel with the JTs. You do not have to crawl under. Just kneel down and reach the T handle just under the edge.
And I did add a cross member at the rear to mount JTs a little closer to the rear edge.
But if you do not want to do even that, then they have a special T handle tool to take care of that.
  • You have to crawl under the rig to initially connect the braces but not everytime you set up or take down. But you do have to `reach' under a foot or so every time. At least that's the way it is on our TT.
Incidentally, I have come to using a closed end box wrench to tighten and loosen the Tee clamps; not as strong as I used to be.
  • Remember that you are still just bracing against your "flexi-frame." Did you install the extra stabilizer jacks near the axles? Since I removed the play from the tongue jack and added the extra stabilizers, I see no need for the parts you propose. As you know we have the same model trailer.

With arms that you propose and X-chocks there is still nothing to stop movement in the center of the trailer, where it is just supported by rubber donuts and springs.
  • Thx, but we already have the Bal X-chocks. My specific question is on the cross-members.
