Just installed my TorkLift Hidden power under bed battery

OK so I finally around to getting my extra battery for camping installed on my Dodge.

TorkLift calls the product Hidden Power.

& of course as I do with all my electrical needs I took the truck to my friend Dennis Hogue at "WIRETEC" in Burbank Ca.

I thought about doing this job myself but 1st off I'm lazy & then I started thinking about how I'm really weak when it comes to any sort of electrical work, Its always been my biggest issues on most of my toys.

Anyways I'm glad I took it to him being he noticed things I never would have.
Like how I had a constant hot lead from my truck batteries to the camper.
& we figured this might be a bad thing in the sense that it could possibly lead to the truck batteries being drained as well as the camper batteries if I accidentally left 12 volt light or something on over time. & Yes I've done this a few times.
Replacing 4 deep cycle batteries could be expensive.

So he installed a constant duty solenoid in the engine compartment to activate with "key on" engine running, instead of being constant hot, which could possibly drain the vehicle batteries if something were to be left ON in the Camper. as I stated above.
From there the Hidden battery is tied into the main charging wire which feeds the 7pin connectors which are located both in the bed of the truck and by the tow hitch.

The Hidden battery is outfitted with the supplied quick disconnect, to aid in future maintenance of the battery, and a 40A fuse for protection.

Speaking of batteries, I went & bought two new ones of these for this swap & put the old one in my boat.
These are great batteries that will take a very deep drain & come back ready for more!

I asked him for a sticker so I can promote his work.

So as you can see its well tucked up & if not for where I placed the sticker it would hardly be noticed.

I have been struggling with where to place a 2nd battery & being its a camper & I wanted to use my minimal storage compartments for other things, this was the best option, & Its completely out of the way.

I personally think this was a great & yet simple Idea, I never would thought of & then when I learned about it I had to get it.

Thanks TorkLift.

Well there Torklift goes again, thinking outside the (battery) box!!

The Battery bank on the trailer will be a standard installation as I have been using additional batteries on the trailer tongue area for some time.

Watch your tongue weight when adding more and more things to it. I have five 85-90 lb batteries on the tongue of my enclosed trailer using the Solar PowerArmor and would not have considered doing this if I still had my previous truck.

My friend had a similar pop up to yours and ended up mounting fuel and water tanks on the rear because his Tundra was approaching rear axle capacity once he loaded up his family of four and everything they wanted to bring along. Maybe look at mounting a PowerArmor on the rear of the pop up if you see your tongue weight get too heavy.
  • Had mine installed just over a year ago by TL Central in Kent, WA. Put a 12volt Interstate AGM in that box, works great. Only issue is the cabling isn't heavy duty, that 3rd battery is only designed to keep the other batteries charged

I am planning a similar mod to my OFF-ROAD POPUP TRAILER where I want to have two locations for my battery banks. One Bank on my trailer and one Bank in the bed of my truck.

I am planning on using the TROJAN 12VDC 150AH T-1275 Deep Cycle batteries...

The Battery bank on the trailer will be a standard installation as I have been using additional batteries on the trailer tongue area for some time.

The Trojan T-1275 banks will each produce 300AHs. I have been running three 12VDC 85AH standard issue GP24 Interstate since late 2008 giving me 255AHs of capacity and have learned very well what needs to be done camping off the power grid using most of my trailer appliances etc... This does not include the Air Conditoner or high wattage Microwave but just about everything gets used.

Being a Ham Radio guy I have a need for a dual requirement for use of my radios. When camping it mostly for the hobby but being involved with Emergency Radio Operations I also seem to go a few alerts and need to have a bigger portable 12VDC operation out of my stand-alone truck.

I want to parallel both these 300AH battery banks when we are in camping mode using the BLUE SEA 4-position HIGH CURRENT rotary DC switches. My PD9260C on-board 60AMP Smart Mode Converter/charger will have to charge both battery when connected. This may have to be upgraded to the PD9280 (80AMP model) as my style of camping off the power grid works best if I can re-charge the batteries in a quick three hour time frame running my on-board converter/charger from my 2KW Honda generator.

When running the truck in its stand-alone setup I am planning on using the BLUE SEA 7650 SI-ACR Smart Solenoid unit installed on the truck side to use the truck alternator system to charge both the truck start battery and the additional 300AH battery bank. The smart solenoid will only charge the additional batteries whenever the Truck Alternator system goes into 14.4VDC boost charge mode. This connection will keep the truck start battery isolated from the battery bank until the the truck goes into boost charge mode and is suppose to keep battery bank high loads from running down the truck start battery.

This is the somewhat the same idea your friend did for you except this is automated and not manual operated like yours is being done. I have used the smart mode solenoids before for other projects. In the old days we could get away with DIODE BASED isolators but you can't do that anymore since the smart mode charging techniques have bee introduced. The high current DIODEs have too much voltage drop across them...

Something like this - ignore the 110Ah rating on the batteries shown - this should now read 150Ah...

My OFF-ROAD POPUP trailer floorplan looks like something like this

All still in the planning waiting for me to come up with the battery replacements first...

  • The frame mount battery does solve a few problems within the TC. Move all your batteries down there and you gain a storage compartment. Yo need an on board battery though. Good modification.
  • Yah, Torklift in Seattle, WA...
    http://torkliftcentral.com/

not a big shop at all, mostly back room stuff and work bays... but like going into a candy store.heheh...

    All kinds of stuff...

I have an appt for them to set up the truck for the camper and asked about the batteries and the Glow steps etc..

So many things, so little time eh???
But I will get the batteries like that, just have to let the dust settle a little on the new stuff right now..
    fun..

Yah, I was just in there asking about it and set up for camper...

Interesting, and I'm looking forward to 2 of them... just trying to figure out where to put them.. but I think they found the spots... behind rear tires... (custom flatbed on a 5500)..

    Looking good...

Well mine is in front of the rear duals.

    You were in just where?
    TorkLift?

I would like to see their shop one day.
