I run a Fleetguard filter, and leave them on the dirty side. Fleetguard rep said paper filters do best filtering when 60% to 90% of dirt capacity. I don't "blow them out" with compressed air. I keep a spare on the shelf and when the filter-minder indicator touches the red I change it.
I asked about oiled cloth filters because in BC forestry industry I understand it was common to run a cloth prefilter wrap over paper filter elements.
Oiled foam filters seem to be a favourite with desert off road users - bikes - ATV's - buggies - trucks.
