As promised, I opened my filter housing and have the following photos to share:

I was all set to wash and re-oil the filter, but it was fine so I brushed off the loose dirt and put it back in. Washed the truck instead.
One confession -- that is not after 50k miles. I had the filter out about 15k miles ago when I installed a K&N cold air intake. I took it back off because the engine started pinging for some reason. Even changed the MAF sensor (no it was not fouled with oil!) and that did not solve the problem. Took the CAI back out and put back in the old MAF sensor and the panel filter you see above. Ping gone. I will try the CAI again one of these days.
