Virtual garage, I've had problems with that piece on mine as well, the screw stripped out of the bracket on the bottom twice so I added another screw, one through the bottom one through the side, haven't had a problem since then. After my last trip I noticed another one of this brackets were broken, one by the dump valves I think, haven't fixed it yet.
I can say that picture doesn't look right I'll look at mine tomorrow and see for sure.
I just relooked at your pictures (i was on my phone earlier) Yours has the screw up on the side and i assume there is one that comes up from the bottom? that's the way mine is now, i added the one on the side. that piece must move back and forth a lot while driving, it's pretty flimsy anyway.
I still don't remember my trim having that big of a gap.
Here's a picture I found of mine on that side, you can zoom in on it. Doesn't appear to be any other piece of trim for that piece, yours seems to have a bigger gap from looking at this, but it is from farther away.
I can't get the picture to work, here's a link....

I appreciate really appreciate the help. You're right about that piece being really flimsy and I'm thinking that it must have snapped from the hours of driving on the interstates. We caught the edge of a severe thunderstorm in Montana so I know the winds were pretty strong.
The gap on my trip is really big, and I'm sure I would have noticed it before, but it could be caused by that piece being flexed out. I'm going to try repairing that support strip with some plumber's strap and JB Weld and maybe putting in extra reinforcement for the trip home.
