Hi all, I am Sarahs better half. You Asked a couple of questions. I will try to answer what I did. First the bed gas prop was indeed an interesting problem. But here we go. With several trial and error attempts I went back to my basic engineering principles. There were two problems with the installment on our cabinet. One what size of prop was needed, and second the cabinet could not support the strength needed. After these two were answered a third and more significant problem occurred which my wife so eloquently described as never being able to close the cabinet unless we set on the bed. The answer was right in front of me. The angle of the prop must go past level in effect pulling the cabinet closed once the door is shut.
I did have to re-enforce the plywood and then add an extension block to get past level. You can see this in the photos. The cabinet framing is not adequate to hold the pressure of the prop, I added two metal brackets to the cross members of the wood frame. The prop I used for this application is a 100# open length 20 inches. The prop was purchased from Campers World and I only used one in the middle.I believe the pictures will be sufficient to allow you to install. Good luck.
