Lance 1131 / 1191 w/ tent - pros/cons?
Hi all,
I'm officially all over the map looking at truck campers.
As much as I'd like to get one of the new multi-slide all hard sided TCs out there to sleep the 4 of us (Adventurer 116DS, Lance 1172) they're new and out of our price range. Love the big Host, Eagle Cap and Chalet TCs but same deal.
Then I discovered the Lance 1131 which I think was out in 2007-2008 and the Lance 1191 (which has a tent option) which I think is 2009+. I can probably swing the 1131 or an early 1191 w/ tent.
(Just in case anyone is looking real close I wouldn't put this on my current truck but on a 1 ton DRW).
What I like about these:
- Our kids are all tracking to be pretty tall. (I'm 6'3"). From what I can tell the dinette and optional bunk above are 6' long. The fold out tent is even bigger. Hard to find enough space for that kind of tall with other sleeping arrangements (couches seem to be short)
- With the fold out tent it gives the kids their own space (playing and generally making noise! :) )
- Sleeping arrangements at opposite ends of the camper. Nice for when kids are making their noise (see above ha ha)
- Deep slideout. Very used to the slide out camping with our 5er!
- Side entry
- Dry bath
- Good tank capacities (Fresh/Gray/Black all 35 gal)
A couple things I'm wondering about:
- Lance builds these wheel well height, so not a "big" basement like a bed rail height Adventurer for example. What external storage is there? My guess from pictures is at the dinette slide, then doors for propane / gen / battery and then one more door which I can't figure out
- Tent seems great for space but will I run into soft side restrictions in some campgrounds? This would be used for month long exploration trips to just about anywhere out West
- Folding up the tent seems to be a chore but I read that using the Fantastic Fan in exhaust mode helps to "suck it all in"
- Of course there is the need to dry out the tent if it's put away on a wet camping trip
- Cold/hot weather temps in the tent area. Read good things about a "Pop-up gizmo" to help with that and could get the kids sleeping bags too if needed
Otherwise seems to be a good option for a family.
Thanks!
