Lance 845 on a long box truck

Hello All

I am not a newbie.. I have been a member of this forums for a while. I have owned 2 truck campers that have been used on my 1999 dodge CTD 4x4. My past campers have been a 2001 Lance815 and a 1989 coachman 9.5. I presently own a fifth wheel 4 season toy hauler and a fifth wheel 4 seasons camper. I have a upcoming project in a remote southeast Alaska town and for reasons to long to discuss, I am unable to use my 2 fifth wheels and I now need a truck camper again for this out of town project. I as always will buy used. I am looking at the lance 915. But they are few and far between. Having said that I really like the idea of having the extra storage in front of a short box camper in a long bed truck. I Have been looking at he lance 845 I really like this lance 845 model. So I am soliciting comments from those have put a short box camper on a long box truck. and or any other comments. yea yea I know it will look stupid but I do a lot of things that look stupid. I enjoy thinking outside the box.

Have a great day

Chris

  • Are you going to be in Alaska for the winter? If so How does the Lance hold up in the cold?
  • Hey JOEB.
as a follow up yes I have been very busy. last year sold the coachman camper and brought a small 5th wheel 4 seasons fifth wheel camper as we needed the extra room. Love this thing.. still need a camper for work I will be looking one while I am down south.

some pictures of my travels this summer in the fifth wheel. it is small enough to be a truck camper though and my heart always belongs to this truck camper forum.

North pole Alaska 17 degrees glad I had the 4 seasons nash.

on my dodge I have a front receiver hitch, when I travel north into the interior I use it as a deflector for rocks. I have used it for storage in the past.

  • We were on I 64 for awhile. Currently we are near Lexington Kentucky headed for Mammoth Cave NP. We took a swing up into southern Ohio as well, looking for fall color changes, with the best found in West Virginia.

Chris, the box I built for my 845 is roughly 5 ft wide, 4 ft tall an 1 1/2 ft thick, which gives me about 30 cubic ft of storage. Are you still working as a marine engineer for the Alaska Ferry system on their ships?
  • Great to have room to mount a gravity feed Titan or other fuel tank in the bed of the truck to extend your range between fuel stops.

My 845 when fully loaded for a trip weighs at least 3400 lbs. so with a SRW truck it required upgrading the tires to support the weight.
  • Hey, Joe B...where in WV are you? I saw 2 TC this weekend on I 64 which is rare. I always wonder if it is anyone on here.
Give me a shout. I am in the Charleston area, but headed up to the middle of the state Saturday to do some fishing on Stonewall Lake.

  • No problems here.. 15" gap..just enough room for my Honda 2000. Beach chairs and boogie boards..
  • If you are having a difficult time finding a LB and using racks for storage then the SB 845 that you have looked at and like for yourself will work fine as joe B says . The 845 is fine for 1 or 2 folks that like each other. However when you throw in a large jealous dog then things get interesting.
  • This is just a thought, but why not just get yourself a front and rear hitch carrier? I have a shortbed camper on my (shortbed) truck and I'd much rather have the additional 18" of floor room than that small amount of space in the bed. I don't know if your truck is a dually or not, but if it is, there are some very large truck campers that have way more storage than a smaller shortbed camper and you'd be able to use at least a front hitch carrier to carry more stuff.

If you have something specific you need the bed space for, then maybe this isn't the best idea, but if there's a way you can have both the longbed camper and the room to carry the stuff you need, I say go for that rather than the shortbed camper just to get that little bit of space back.
  • Chris, good to see you posting again. I have a Lance 845 on a long bed Chevy DRW crew cab and it works great for us. As you no doubt know, the CG to axle stays the sane on either a short bed or long using the 845. I built a plywood box to fit in the 18 inch space between the back of the truck and front of the TC. The extra storage room is great as the 845 has little or no outside storage. Because this 845 has a generator, I have zero outside storage where my previous 845 didn't have a generator so it had that space for storage.

We are currently in West Virginia camping, and the extra room for junk is great. Use it to store our lawn chairs, bagged, tool box, water hoses, 30 amp extension cords, water jugs, food items, fake fire logs, fire tools, etc.

You can go to my web site below, then click on Alaska trip June July of 2004, 2006, etc., then scroll down toward the bottom of the page, then click on web storage photos, to see what I built and use. If I do it over, I would extend it to come out over both side bed rails. I keep thinking about having one of the local boat shops in Stuart build me a fiberglass box that would look better. But a lot more dollars involved in that. LOL
