Lance Camper Wiring to Truck

I have never been thrilled with the Lance plug but it came with the camper and the dealer wired up the truck. This was 6 years ago. I have struggled on and off with continuity and had to move the camper plug and loop the wires in different directions to get the lights to work, but it always worked eventually. Now it has become an issue that took me almost an hour to get the lights working this last time out. I wiggled the ground wire on the truck with the wife watching the lights and did the same in the camper but it didn't make it work. I also tried to clean up the camper plug, but that didn't seem to help either... Tried a bunch of things and it finally worked when I got it wedged just right.

I don't need any extra heavy charging from the alternator as I have solar, and don't run the fridge on 12V.

I am thinking I need to replace the camper plug with something easier and less of a hassle. Is the standard 7-way truck plug good enough.

I use the rear 7-way plug for towing. Can I get a Y-adapter off the rear plug and run a longer cord to/from the camper?

Looking for wiring connection options & opinions between the truck and the camper. Camper is a 2008 Lance 830 and Truck is a 2006 Dodge diesel.

Cool to see that someone else does that. I'm heading out tomorrow and am going to hit the road with the inverter powering the fridge from a warm start.

I'd like to upgrade the camper side of my power connection, but there's no access to the back side of the connector, so I have no idea how much space is back there.
  • WOW! I have never had an issue with the plug from Lance, but I do keep it clean a greased(dielectric). Two Lances so far starting in 1997. I gues I am lucky.

I agree that there are better systems out there fro almost every system in a TC, but if eveything was the highest quality and durability...would we be able to afford the TC?
  • Well, since you asked, I don't like the standard RV 7-way plug. It's a weak design, and the only good thing I can say about it is that it's the standard. I wish RV's would use a 7-pin plug like the one used on semi tractor-trailers, with round pin and sleeve connectors that will handle up to 8 gauge charge wires and many more amps than the RV plug. The connections on the back side of the plug are a better design and more secure.

The Lance plug is OK, it also supports 8 gauge charge wires, but it's harder to find when you need one. You can get a 7-way semi trailer plug at any NAPA. Since I was going to install a dedicated plug for the TC in the bed close to the cab, that's what I used. And, I do run a a heavy duty charge circuit through it that will charge the camper battery quickly, and keep up with drain of running the fridge off an inverter while on the road.

  • My TCs have all been re-wired to a 7 pin. I have a 7 pin in the bed of the truck and one at the bumper.

I have a 2010 830. I run all the 12 volt stuff off my 7 pin at the rear of the truck when traveling. Never had a problem. Lights work. I do have a problem occasionally with the rear marker lights oxidizing and have to remove the light and clean it up.

    hope this helps you out.
