Lance front marker light queston

I need to replace a front marker light on my 2009 Lance 845 and I am wondering if they could be pop riveted on? My eyes are not the best, but it sure looks like pop rivets to me. Anyone done this that knows for sure before I get the drill out?

Thanks!
  • I cant see them putting marker lights on with anything but screws. Most mfgs use square bit screws
  • Yes, they are pop riveted on. I had to replace the center front marker light on my 2004 Lance 1161 and had to drill out the pop rivets from the base (the lens and light assembly broke and blew off somewhere on the road). I ordered a whole new light assembly from Lance and secured it back on with slightly larger pop rivets (and plenty of caulking - both in the holes and around the lamp.) Everything is still on the camper today and working just fine. I have popped the covers off of the two other marker lamps on the front of the camper as well (the ones on the left and right) and I believe they are pop riveted on as well. I removed the covers to clean inside and re-caulked after putting them back on.
  • OK, thanks for the help. They were pop rivets for sure. I drilled them out and pulled the light off and cleaned the old caulk from the mounting area. I have a new light and some Geocel 28127V Pro Flex on order. Is this the correct caulk or do I need to get something different?

After I am done installing the light I plan on doing a pressure test of the complete truck camper using an electric leaf blower ported into one of the roof vent opening.

    Thanks again!

In my experience you don't want to use the regular pro flex as it dries slightly tacky and collects dirt which is VERY hard to clean off. Use pro flex rv which dries more completely and doesn't collect dirt.
  • Are you sure they are regular Pop rivets? The heads look the same on all rivets but I bet that they are "peel" type pop rivets which expand behind the skin for better gripping.
  • Proflex RV works, but I hate the stuff because after several years it gets rock hard. It also starts to discolor and get mildewy looking when bugs get on it on the nose of the RV

I am not sure if they were regular pop rivets or the type you are talking about. The main part of the rivet has went into the camper wall area and I can't see it.

The only type of pop rivet that I can find that might be like you are talking about are called exploding rivets...... at least on Amazon anyway. Do you have a link or source for another style?

    Thanks!
  • Wow! Riveted?? I guess that means those on the front of my 2007 are also... I'll have to look. Thank goodness I have a riveter! I don't personally think rivets are such a good idea for plastic lights...

Glad you were able to get it worked out !

    Dak
  • I was able to find some "peel rivets" at McMaster-Carr and have them on order.

Thanks to everyone for the help and replies!

One problem with using a non OEM product like Pro Flex in place of the grey butyl tape (if thats the case) is once cured its now bonded permanently to the side of the trailer and may not come off without breaking it.

Pro Seal can be used as a final seal around the edges if needed.
