Lithium Ion Batteries. Who makes the best one?

There is a great quantity of batteries out on the market. Which ones have you used, or are using? What is good or bad about them?

If Battleborns were built like Tesla batteries, you wouldn't want one in your RV. They're entirely different - perhaps they seem similar because they both use cylindrical cells, but that is about where the similarities end.

You should be able to discharge LiFePO4 batteries to 0% every single day and never have an issue with one not waking up. The issue you had usually can be fixed by putting that battery in parallel with another battery that is operable, to wake the BMS.

I've worked on systems with AmpereTime, Lion, SOK, Battleborn, SimpliPhi, Lithionics, Discover, and other batteries, and those are listed roughly in order of ascending cost. As you go up the chain you get more into diminishing returns - all of those are generally safe choices and will perform well. I've excluded quite a few that I didn't find worth mentioning or recommending. AmpereTime is hard to beat from a value perspective, Discover is hard to beat from a features one. Some of the batteries from Amazon and Ebay have sketchy BMS and poor quality cells.
I did the wake up procedure. BB also tried to wake it up. They said the BMS was the problem, and replaced the battery. I believe them, as they actually diagnosed it in person, not over the internet. I really do not care who is right on the cause. Bottom line is they took care of it quickly without any issue.
  • Can a standard truck alternator or heavy duty alternator safely charge a lithium battery. Just curious
  • We have a Lithionics 125a/h battery on the tongue of our TT. Paid about 1300 USD for it 2 years ago and have been very happy with it. Waaay expensive compared to others including BB, but the quality is top-notch. I wanted bullet-proof quality vs more a/h for the same money since I charge all day with solar and as needed via generator. A nice feature is if you discharge down to about 8% the battery shuts down. Hit the on/off switch and you can recover that last 8% if necessary. The Bluetooth is nice. They get my vote for the best. Lotta money, though.

  • I did 4 of these, no problems in 3 years.

  • Battle Born is the leader. Of course they also cost the most. Will Prowse does a lot of battery reviews, including teardowns to see what is inside.

I have 8 of them. I messed up and drained my bank to zero. All of the batteries except one woke up fine. The one that did not, Battle Born replaced it without issue. They said that the battery itself was fine, but it's BMS was not letting it wake up.

Of course I am a fan of BB, but do check out Will's reviews. After seeing how they are constructed and perform, only you can decide which ones are right for you.
  • I’m using a 200 AH Lossigy. So far no issues. So nice that there is no need to recharge fully on a daily basis, no water checking and refilling, no gassing or cleaning etc.
