Load Capacity

I have a 2008 f-350 dually crew cab with the 6.4l diesel. It weighed in today at 9000 pound full of gas. I figure with the 1000 pounds added for the wife and kids and dog and me+our stuff I have only 3000 pounds left. How come I see so many extra large TC on the back of non-duallies. Are people over weight? is my truck just heavy or what. My GVWR is 13000 pounds a non dully is 11000. I am looking into getting a TC just sold my 43 foot toy hauler and just want to get back to camping in remote areas. But can't seem to find on that fits all of us and is within the weight limits of my truck. What is your opinion on the weight issues?

Thank you all have a great day

  • My GVWR is 9800 lbs and I am 11,500 lbs when loaded. My smaller truck is only 7500 lbs unloaded compared to yours. I am bellow the weight ratings of the axles but had to upgrade rear suspension and wheels. If you start taking apart the pieces of your truck, you find the lowest rated components and upgrade them to get it to a safe point for the load you wish to carry. At some point it is less expensive to buy a different truck, but that is not the only option if you are willing to do some research.
  • Most people are overweight by a bit. If you search the threads here, you can find lots of examples and threads.
  • Quick answer is yes, many are over weight. Hopefully, safely. My rig is about 500# over the door sticker on the rear axle. The axle can carry the weight so the the weak point is the tires, springs, and shocks. My door sticker rear axle weight specifies 6200# which is the rating of the tires. My rear axle weight with the two of us in the truck and 20 gallons of water is 6400#. To compensate I kept the factory 16" steels wheels and put on tires rated at 3750# each and air springs.

Another thing to consider is that I'm running a gas burner and the whole truck (CC LB)with the wife and I both, no camper, weighs only 6200#.

The tires are the safety factor, so don't exceed their max.

Your going to get many opinions on this so you'll need to sort out the math.

If I could get the wife to leave her purse at home we could carry a lot more.

    Good luck,
