Thanks to everyone for your advice, encouragement, and ...er...counseling. For the several of you that identified with my personality type, you know it is hard for us to truly "relax".
Someone asked about the trailer - it is 7600 lbs WET.
Someone else asked about the OCD research:
My range is relatively short and there are places on this trip where it is a long way between gas stations (one leg=140 miles between gas, another 50 miles). I bought a book "The Next Exit" which is great for services along 1000 miles of I=-40. Then I used MapQuest to search the non-interstate routes to see where gas is....and isn't, so I know where/when to fill up whether needed or not
This will stir controversy I imagine, but I built a rack to carry 2 jerry cans of gas in the back of the truck. Looked at replacement tanks but too expensive for this one trip, and adds a LOT more weight
I bought a book "Mountain Directory West" that shows all the long and steep hills. I planned the trip around some of those, but others it's just helpful to know where they are, how steep, and how long
I located all the Toyota dealers along the route, and there aren't many. That's a very minor concern and the main reason I bought the Tundra. I bought a new gas cap to carry - only thing I've ever replaced on a Toyota.
I plan to "carry" and researched the gun laws for all 9 states from three different sources. The challenge was finding rules on the Navajo Reservation. In a momentary lapse of forthrightness, I e-mailed the Utah HP and just asked them who to ask. 3 days later a very nice Sargent called me and told me what he knew - apparently the Navajos don't publish their rules.
(*) the most eye-opening thing I did was researching the various campgrounds, from GS ratings to Travelocity and "RV park reviews" and right down to examining them in satellite view on maps software (although the NSA was no help at all).
Now to the more reasonable side of the trip:
(*)Our only son lives in Santa Fe and we will spend 4-5 days with him on the way out and again on the way back, so getting from Ala to NM is a function of holding our breath down I-40. We leave the day before Memorial Day, so I felt I had to make reservations for those 4 transient nights to NM.
(*)In the Utah loop, each stop is 4 nights of camping, includes at least one day to do nothing, and no reservations made for anything other than the campgrounds (some of which started filling up in January).
(*) So far successfully resisted the temptation to make CG reservations after we leave Utah.
I just retired and it is oh so hard to let go of research, contingency planning, etc., that I have been conditioned to do in 40 years of chemical plant management. I'm encouraged there were so many of you folks out there that could relate to the OCD issue.
Now, all I have to do is thoroughly plan a few spontaneous activities and we'll be ready to go.
