As long as you are certain that your trailer needs won't grow beyond the capabilities of your half ton, it should be fine. More power, more payload, more capable transmission.
You might be surprised how a 3/4 ton truck can drive as a daily driver though. I'm not sure how many options you are getting on your half ton, but if you can't buy a relatively optioned 3/4 ton gas truck for $45K or less, something is wrong. My FIL has a 2011 Chevy with the 6.0 and has great power, respectable fuel economy and a much better vehicle for towing.
