looking at new trucks

I served in the military and fought in the Viet Nam war, born and raised here and signed on a dotted line that I'd give my life for my country...and I STILL would, Oh, and I love my country more than any other country on this planet... I'm as patriotic as they come, maybe more so....getting really old when it appears Ford is the only truck that one should buy when it comes to the big three's offerings because Ram trucks are built in Mexico and GM took all the bail out and have all the recalls and Ford is perfect.:R

Probably main reason I've never owned one...I'm far from perfect, thus I couldn't do the Ford name justice by owning one..I'll leave that to the "true Americans":R

Keep in mind that Ford 6.7 diesels are made in Chihuahua, Mexico!!!!!!
The Ohio plant was not awarded this production and it all went south of the border. Most people are not aware of this and continue to think Ford's image is untarnished.

To the OP . . . I don't know your family situation, but if it were me,I would include the wife in the process of buying a truck. You need her buy in for a happy camping experience. Trust me.

I would go by the weight of the trailer when fully loaded. If it is less than 10,000 lbs. the gas with the right gears will be OK. If it is more than 10,000 lbs. I would go with the diesel engine to get the greater torque for going up grades and accelerating into traffic and the downhill braking from the diesel engine's exhaust brake.

A gas truck may be tow rated for 12,000 lbs. but I would no dream of actually towing a load that is anywhere close to 100% of the rated maximum by the manufacturer. In the past I have found their claims to be far from accurate in terms of what was a safe load to tow.

Yup, as soon as she see's that GM product she will RUN to the Ram dealer and let you buy anything you want there!

If it were me, I would get the 3500. Buying new, it is minimal price difference but usually a much larger difference in GVWR and GCVWR. Unless you live in a state where there is a huge cost increase in taxes or registration for over 10,001 lbs, the 1 ton truck is the obvious choice.

If you can wait, you can find or order the exact truck YOU want. When I buy new, I get what I want... not what the dealer offers. Unless you are getting a huge discount to buy something on the lot, I would wait and get exactly what I want.

I don't really think you can go wrong with either the 6.4 Hemi or the Cummins. The both appear to be exceptionally stout engines and the new Ram's look like they are holding up pretty well. There are a couple of things you need to consider when deciding between the gas or diesel;
If you are towing over 13 or 14K lbs, you might regret having the gas. The new 6.4 might push that weight up a little bit, but heavier weights are diesel territory.
If you are towing in the mountains/elevation a lot, the diesel makes more sense.
If you don't tow that often, the gas might be the more economical choice.

I just picked up a new ram 2500 with the cummins last week.

The diesel was a no brainer. 20K off sticker, makes it cheaper than a half ton. I did a 1000km empty road trip over the weekend, and avg 12l/100km.
Better than my 11 f150 that i traded in.

Ford didn't take a gov bailout, but took a huge multi billion dollar loan from Saudi Arabia.
I'll take a Ram bulit in Mexico.

My current Ford and my previous Ford were both built in Canada, as were my previous two GM vehicles.

Wasn't cutting on Ford, just got tired of hearing all the negatives about owning a Ram, or Chevy/GM....You SURE your Fords weren't built in the good ole US of A..:B

...by the way, I like your toys:)...(and back then, I was a Chevy guy:)
