Jim, it depends on the definition of SoCal -- if you include the back-country of the Central Coast, there is plenty of solitude to be had! Not like the San Gabriel Mtns., which are pretty crowded all the time.
But even in the local mountains, if you hike, you can quickly escape from the hordes -- as soon as you get a mile from the trailhead, there is almost nobody around.
