Loss of Power in 08 F550 6.4 Powerstroke

I am stuck on the side of the road 1/3 into the area the sign said; "No Services next 75 miles." Yep, one of the hazards of traveling in the west. I am highway 54, right in front of the Welcome to New Mexico at the Texas state line.

About 10 miles northeast of where I am, the Cruise Control suddenly went off and would not come back on. At this time my truck lost it's ability to maintain highway speed. I can limp along about 40 mph when there is no hills.

Any suggestions on a quick fix so I can get to a shop? Of if someone has had this happen to them?

Any help is appreciated.

  • Bryan, the one time my 2010 F450 (same engine as yours) acted like that it turned out to be one of the EGT sensors had failed, and the trucks computer kneecapped the engine to a very low power output. Could only get about 5 psi of boost out of it. I was able to drive it (slowly) to the next town that had a Ford dealership and get it fixed. The "check engine" light didn't illuminate until AFTER I had turned the truck off and back on. The truck was out of warranty, but that sensor turned out to be covered by the longer EPA mandated pollution controls warranty, so it didn't cost me anything to fix. It wouldn't have been a costly fix even if the warranty hadn't covered it.

If the truck will move without puking fluids, belching smoke, or making scary noises, I'd probably drive it to the nearest service.

I sincerely hope this is relatively minor problem for you, and you are back on the road quickly.

  • Stop and restart?
    Maybe replace your fuel filter.
Wish I could give you more..
