All they have to do is detune the trucks. The Navistar version of the 6.0 liter engine was rated at 300 hp. The Ford version of the same engine was rated at 340 hp. Navistar said that this was the reason that the Ford version of the engine was blowing head gaskets and the Navistar engine wasn't. It only takes a change in the ECU programming to advance the fuel injection timing and add boost.
Heavier duty versions of the engine could very well have detuned engines because manufacturers expect the engines to be run harder under heavier loads. Sustained high RPMs under heavy loads are rough on an engine and would reduce longevity if the fuel injection was advanced.
