LT tires with low weight rating, or P tires with high?

Hello folks :). I need some tires!

My van is mostly self-contained, but I will occasionally haul a small Scamp trailer. I don't do serious off-roading, but I drive on a lot of terrible dirt and gravel roads. So I am looking at AT tires.

Folks on forums specific to my van model universally say that LT tires handle much better for this vehicle, due to the stiffer sidewalls.

But with stock rims, tire choices are limited. There are two choices for AT LT tires, and one or two for AT P tires. The LT's are C load, and weight rated at 1765. The P's are XL, and rated at 2100.

The van weighs 3500-4500 according to the interwebz; I have not weighed mine and it's not practical to do so right now. I have removed 300lbs of seats and 600lbs of passengers, and will not be doing fluid tanks. So I am guessing I am near to stock weight, with gear. The trailer weighs about 1200 + gear.

I'm leaning towards the LTs, but thought I ought to check with you folks first! Would the heavier-weighted P tires actually be stiffer?

Thanks a bunch for any advice :).

Thank you, JIMNLIN! That was very helpful :).
  • The 50 psi C load range has a 6 ply rating.
The P tire has a 4 ply rating.
Notice rating vs actual number of plies. Both tires may have but two ply carcass. The C load range will stand up to more abuse like bouncing over curbs/holes in the road/etc than the P tire.

The P tire capacity is required by fed regs to be derated by dividing its capacity by 1.1 when mounted on a truck or trailer. Makes the 2100 lb P tire actual capacity around 1900 lbs

If your not having issues with your present P tires I would go with the P tires you mention.
