Lubricating a Happijac

My camper has not been used for 3 years now. I need to go on a trip next week and am afraid the units will give me grief when putting it on my truck. I have thought about removing the jack and extending the leg, drilling a small hole in the middle of the housing and giving it a good dose of WD40 or Lubriplate as a temporary measure. Any reason why this would not be advisable?
  • Scroll back to main page and click on sticky "truck camper university"......scroll way down until you see camper jacks, then see Happijack lubrication....really good instructions with pictures for opening up the mechanism and lubing....the only really proper way of doing them....a bit finnicky but really quite easy to do.
  • Thanks for input. I took one apart. What a mess. Rust rust everywhere. Water gets in at the top where the motor attaches with nowhere to go but down - Sloooooowly. If it had not been for a ton of grease in there it would have rusted away. That bottom gear was a pickle since it had rusted to the shaft. Next time I may drill a hole just below it to allow me to get a screw driver in there to pop it loose.

Bummer.... Well now you know how to do it.. Just got to keep the sequence of the spacers/shims and bearings in the proper order.

Is the jack going to be useable or toast?

  • Just a curiosity...how did you get the gear off? I'm happy you got to it before it was really toast. I said your going to have a time getting it off but rusted on? Wow, I guess I was lucky myself. I have mentioned many times before that if your drains are hitting the motor housing that you need to cover your motors with a plastic bag and get extended drains along with sealing the base of the motor at the square tube. Either way does it still work?
