LWB camper in SWB pickup

I'm in south Texas and going on a camping trip to Colorado for a week in July. My neighbor has offered to let me use his truck camper for the trip. Trouble is, his camper was designed for a LWB and I drive a SWB dually. I don't have enough experience with truck campers to be smart enough to run for the hills from this idea, so please enlighten me. In my minds eye, I should be able to put the tailgate down and make it work that way. What am I overlooking?

Edit: The camper is a 2001 Bigfoot brand Columbia River model. Pickup is a 2007 Dodge 3500 SWB custom dually.

  • The DRW will carry it so COG doesn't really matter. However, you do have a problem with width unless it has jack hinges on it.

Oh, and thanks for mentioning the support issue. I hadn't even considered that it might be built in a way that would require it to need the entire floor supported.

Yea, supporting it is a good thing. I misspelled my first reply and corrected it.
... the tailgate really is not designed for weight, I found out the hard way on an earlier pick up when I tried to haul home a bunch of 16' PS joists. I figured 8' bed, about 2' of folded-down tailgate would give me 4' overhang with a red flag.
Well it worked and I got it home, but damaged the tailgate from the weight.
  • Another factor is the Center of Gravity of the TC, it should always be in front of the rear axle,

  • I don't have tie-downs, however, if I decide that this is something I will for sure do, I'll likely pick up a set. I've toyed with the idea of a truck camper for a number of years now and never pulled the trigger on buying one. I can either save the tie-downs for later or resale them when I get back. I do have a plug in the bed though for hauling cattle and other trailers.

No, the truck isn't a Dodge Mega-cab. Its a standard Quad-Cab short bed that I converted to a dually using a Mega-cab bed and dually components (axle, front adapters, etc.). I have no doubts about the truck being able to handle the weight, just not sure about the whole LWB/SWB issue.
  • If the camper is designed for a LB then generally it will need to be FULLY supported by the long bed. A camper's floor might not be designed for that cantilevered portion sticking back... and don't rely on a folded-down tailgate as they are not designed to support weight and could even damage it.

I say "generally" because there are some models that are designed to be able to go on either a long or short.

Even if it can work, is your truck set up to carry a camper? It looks as if you have a Ddge Mega cab... do you have tie-downs, 7-way plug?
