This discussion so far seems to center around fuel pump failures and dirty fuel. I have heard that the pumps fail largely because of the low lubricity of fuel without sulfer in it and that fuel additives help. I have two fairly new diesels and keep additives in the fuel. No problems so far but it is way too early to claim victory. Does anyone with a lot of miles have an opinion on additives?
Another issue seems to be the particulate filters. I have been hearing of some horrible repair bills on them but don't see any real pattern yet. I would have been willing to stick with has engines had they been offered in the two applications where I have diesels. One is in a DP and the other is in a 60hp tractor. I used to have a gas tractor and had no complaints about it. A friend told me that he just sank $15K into the emissions control system on a Caterpillar skid steer. I can buy a lot of gas for $15k. I will have to see how my Ecoboost engines hold up but so far they have all the power and torque that I need.
