Making "Run Flat" tires?

When I used it, it was called Flat Proof and it wasn’t green and wasn’t an aerosol (Slime was unheard of yet)…

I used it in tube type dirt bike tires and it worked very well for its intended purpose and was worth the time and cost of using it…

Every time I replaced a tire I replaced the tube with it… the tire would have sometimes 30 or more thorn punchers it and never go flat…

The only other tires I use it in was a wheelbarrow and a couple of golf car tires that were tubeless… it worked well on them to, but I had no intention of reusing the wheels if they didn’t hold air, or having someone else service them…

Work or not I wouldn’t use it in my personal vehicles for highway use…

Had run flats on my Honda Odyssey and swapped the for new rims and tires over the spring. Only shop in town who could change the tires was Firestone and they were $212 a tire. If you get a flat you would destroy the tire driving on it too far. Also had no spare in van, had to buy a spare tire kit also. New tires ride much better now. Not worth the cost in my opinion.

We have a local farm tire repair shop that puts slime in our farm times for us. It works quite well. Of course he pumps it in with a big pump it's not one of those little can things. It's pink not green.


Since the tire failures often seem to be from the tires flying apart I'm not sure sliming them would help much.

Some tire shops refuse to work on tires with Slime in them.

TPMS might be nice to have to tell you what the pressures are doing, but there is no substitution for a routine pre-trip inspection of your tires. TPMS isn't going to help if you have a great big bulge on the inside of your tire, that decides to blow at 65-70 on the Interstate.

I read a post awhile back, the guys TPMS said is tire was down a bit on air pressure, but "not enough to cause the blow out".

It was just a thought. I know they still make run flat's but I did mean self sealing and don't know if they make them anymore. Would be nice if they made ST's that way, and it really worked.

Actually I have dismounted many tires with the slime type stuff in them. Really makes no difference to me. Except when a guy comes in and wants a tire patched on the inside and plugged. If his tire is "slimed" I will only plug from the outside. Will not dismount to patch inside with that stuff inside the tire.

To be honest, I have never seen that stuff prevent a flat tire.

Going one step further, some cheap tire sealants, NOT "Slime" brand, contain propane or butane as a propellant. Not something the tire guy wants to work with.

Heck, my mom had real run flat tires on her Cadillac in the 1960's.

Sure wish we had them for travel trailers.

Actually, those would be categorized as "self-sealing" tires.

Real "run-flat" tires can be aired down to zero psi and still be driven on.

You are probably referring to the green "slime" stuff. It would be an interesting idea, probably wouldn't hurt unless it plugged up a TPMS system you were using.

I had "self-sealing" tires from the factory on a 2002 Chevy Venture we owned. They were made by General Tire. I don't hear much about self-sealing tires lately, don't know if they are still around.

Now, real run-flat tires for a trailer would be interesting.
