Mattress toppers

We just purchased a new tt and are looking for input or reviews on mattress toppers. Is anyone using the bamboo ones? They seem really spendy and wonder why.

The stock mattress in our 2014 Coachmen is rock hard so I added a Novaform 3" memory foam / gel topper from Costco here in Canada but also available in the US at Costco. It turned that rock hard mattress into a luxurious pillow top ... and that was 5 yrs ago. Since our mattress is a short queen I extended the bed platform by 6", pulled the mattress forward, and used the extra topper length to fill the gap at the head of the bed. Love it, wouldn't change it, wouldn't ever consider replacing the mattress itself as there's absolutely no need. :B

  • Did the topper from overstock.com for a few years. Far prefer the replacement foam mattress we have now.
  • I bought two of the Kohls Big Ones Gel foam toppers when they were on sale for $29.99 any size. They work so well that Moose-dog refuses to get out of bed until noon.

Putting two together really made the difference. I did the same with the bed at home.
  • We have found mattress toppers to be minimally effective and short-lived. Our solution was to replace the mattress (standard queen) with a good quality residential foam mattress. Others prefer the Sleep Number Beds, etc. Our Tuft & Needle mattress gives us a great night's sleep every night for less than 1/4 the price of some of the other options.

Mattress toppers are great, but buy a good, firm one. One of the best mods we did on our previous trailer. Never heard of a bamboo one however
  • I have a good quality 4" memory foam topper over the stock RV mattress and it works great. I also have a fitted mattress protector that holds the topper in place.
  • We used a memory foam topper on our last TT's mattress. It was OK but it shrank down so it was about 3" narrower than the mattress. It also liked to move around and try to slide off one side of the bed. So I don't know that I would recommend one.
The mattress in our new Northwood is pure junk. My wife and I (135 & 170#) have left permanent dents in it after only ten nights. I figure we'll flip it and get one more season out of it. Then we'll be in the market for a new mattress next year rather than just a topper.
  • I got a 4 inch memory foam one off ebay for a bout $100. No sure about the bamboo ones.
