How can I identify a Max Tow F150 by decoding the VIN? I'll be replacing my 2012 F150 with a newer one in the next 6 months or so. I'd like the heavier duty package when I do. But how does Ford identify it? Thanks.
Back to the OP's question...it has been answered many time and in many different ways...
Bottom line for me, is to forget all of the marketing nomenclature and just use Ford's own GVWR and the main one RGAWR. Still lots and lots of info, but look beyond the marketing stuff. Notice Ford, as does them all, categorizes row and columns with what matters in this topic regard...engine, diff ratio and size of the truck (regular, extended, crew, etc) GVWR vs diff ratio vs GCWR. I did forget that they mostly do NOT list RGAWR, as that gets too technical for the majority of folks...that is buried in 'payload' or 'cargo' info
Get the highest they offer when you order...or if buying used, check out Ford's site for a 2017. You can look up any other year and the older years may have Ford remove them...so spend some time to find as many and down load them.
Print them out and highlight the ones you like. Their ratings will be in one of the charts
Good luck
This one is their sales brochure and more marketing than specifications
