- ChooChooMan74ExplorerI think you should be OK. My fictitious dry weight is a little less than yours, and my Jeep handles it. Our engines are not comparable, though. I believe my I4 diesel produces more torque than your V6 Gasser, so you will need higher RPMs than I do.
- APTExplorerTowing performance is very subjective. Towing any high walled trailer takes a lot of power to pull two sheets of plywood through the air at 60-65mph. With any naturally aspirated V6, you'll be cruising near 3000rpm with downshifts for hills. If that is acceptable, then I would say the current 4-Runner should be fine. The JCG with 8-spd should be a little better with smaller gear ratio spreads. But if you want the power, it will be singing at times over 5000rpm. If that is the part that troubles your current truck, then I recommend something with more torque in the engine speed you want, say a V8 or turbocharged V6.

- lanerdExplorer IITow ratings are a figment of the mfg'ers imagination. It is a sales gimmick as each mfg makes up it's own determination of what a tow rating constitutes.
The rating the OP should be more aware of is the RAWR and the Payload capacity. Those will be exceed long before any imaginary tow rating is met

You're an engineer. You of all people should know there is a lot more to towing a travel trailer than the tow rating. Have you actually towed a travel trailer that size with said TV? Not on a proving ground, but fully loaded on a trip with hills and wind?
That trailer at 4k "dry weight" is more likely over 5k loaded. While I don't doubt for a moment that the GC will tow the trailer safely, personal experience tells me that the closer you get to rated capacities, the less pleasant the overall towing experience is. In this case the OP should plenty of reserve capacity and the towing experience should be pretty decent.
Yes I have as a matter of fact! If fact that's my job. I've tested the JGC to much higher weight levels than that in much hotter climates than you can imagine. This is a fine combination of TV and TT. The fullly loaded 5K figure is really still 1200# below the rated towing weight. End of story! Oh, and in case you're one of those who say that you should never exceed 80% of the tow rating, you're wrong. I am done debating. I have said what needed to be said. - Campfire_TimeExplorer

Yes! OP this would make a fine tow vehicle for your TT. - Community AlumniThe OP is getting a dose of reality from me since I own a V6 2014 GC and tow a similar-weight TT. Do you tow with a 2014 GC?

Ignore the comments made by those that don't have any experience towing a TT with a 2014 or newer GC. They'll tell you you'll need an F-350 diesel to tow a 5,000 lb. trailer. :R
Snide remarks are not what the OP needs. A dose of reality is! - Community AlumniIgnore the comments made by those that don't have any experience towing a TT with a 2014 or newer GC. They'll tell you you'll need an F-350 diesel to tow a 5,000 lb. trailer. :R
