- profdant139Explorer IIVery interesting -- essentially an RV in a big box on a shelf in back of the truck. Attach the legs, lift the box, drive out, and there is your freestanding unit. Good video.
Two comments -- it looks like it would be wobbly on those spindly legs.
And it looks tricky to back the truck back into position under the unit without hitting the legs. Not impossible, but difficult. - tmartin000Explorer IINow, it is a neat unique idea! That I applaud. But its not for me.
- jimh406Explorer IIIIf you search the archives, you can find more information about similar models. Here's one of the threads. http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/26782101/gotomsg/26784650.cfm#26784650
- garyhauptExplorerWhat attracted me was the module. Plus, one could pretty easily build their own, using fibreglass and so on. Just seemed like a good idea.
Gary Haupt - profdant139Explorer IIAnd I bet the legs could be steadied with some cross-bracing -- not hard to retrofit.
- FreebirdFliesExplorerI think this might be a hit with the Expedition Portal forum crowd. They tend to be young and very adventurous.
Once upon a time, I was young...... I even remember some of it. Lol
Great concept, and it looks like good execution. It is just quite a few decades to late for me.... :-) - garyhauptExplorer

Gary Haupt - Downwindtracke1ExplorerWe're renting a 4x4 with a rooftop this June for Oz. The one we rented in Namibia a couple of years back was just on a single cab bakkie and with a back opening canopy. This box on the back of a ute should be much handier. Both the "bakkie" we rented, and the "ute" that we will renting are Nissan Navaras, (Frontier). This time, we'll be getting a double cab turbo diesel with a side opening box. Lesson learned.
At my age, dressing in a rooftop tent requires taking some yoga lessons for preparation. The 2 inch hard foam is a bit tough on the old bones, too. But we're won't be on the ground, important to the DW.
We'll be going from Perth to Darwin through the Kimberley. Rental companies don't like the Kimberley . But Aussies consider the Kimberley in the north west of the state of Western Australia their #1 must see. You cross a few rivers without bridges. You don't do the first wade because of "salties", salt water crocs.
Look it up on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_atAxC6sIc - 805greggExplorerRoof top tent were invented in Africa, to get away from dangerous animals, most parts of the world they are not needed. There are lots of companies that make them, very expensive and inconvenient when compared to a ground tent.
- BedlamModeratorWith my luck, I would end up like this guy trying a river crossing:
