Well... basically all pickup trucks sold here (Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara, VW Amarok etc.) are limited to a GVWR of 3500 kgs (7700 lbs) or less. That is a fairly hard number throughout the EU. A number of regulations change at that limit. The newer driver's licenses, for example, are limited to a GVWR of 3500 kgs, and you need an additional license if you want to operate a heavier vehicle in the EU. ("Older" folks like myself can drive up to 7500 kgs / 16500 lbs with their license)
So the trucks are fairly small and lightweight, and so are the campers that go on them. And if you look at the trucks, many of them have very short beds, at least when they are crew cabs. It is really a very tight balancing game weight-wise...
One advantage they are very good off Road. Us Pickups not so much. Unlike the US Australian sourced units are pretty watertight as Jungle is a terrain, they go
through. Short beds overcome by singlecab utility beds - RobertRyanExplorer

We don't have much flat roads in CA and NV, we drive fast and this is average from 2 weeks with 10-20% of city driving.
Nice to fill up once or twice a month.
