Please do not take offense, but other than aesthetics, does the "RATS NEST" really make difference?
My belief is that a tight bundle of wires hold the heat in, whereas a loose bundle disperses the heat. I have read wiring charts that state a heavier gauge wire is required in bundled wires.
The downside to rats nests are that unsecured wires are free to chaff on other wires, structures, etc.
You are right about wires in bundles though, there are diagrams about how many wires of different sizes/loads can be bundled.
I'm an aircraft mechanic...so I tend to build everything like I would an airplane.

This, allows for cleaning of wires and quick troubleshooting of problems...also precludes from chaffing of wires.
