modifty stove w/ignitor

Has anyone bought a generic spark generator for gas grills and add it to a stove to make lighting easier? Seems you could drill a small hole in the front panel and wire it from underneath. A 6 wire ignitor off amazon is less than $11 and a AA battery you could get a seasons of easy lights. I'm just concerned about mounting the spark tip and a ground source.

Thanks in advance,
Jon
  • Been done! There is a great write up on it already. Do a search and it should pop right up. Awesome mod, you'll love it!

  • That is the thread at the end of my last post. not sure how to make it a clicky. Good luck, Bill
  • I would like to hear if there is any way to add one for lighting the oven pilot ?
I looked into a year or so ago, and couldn't find a way

Earlier this year I took a quick look at what it would take to add one to our oven. It would be pretty easy from a mechanical installation point, but the problem would be the long length of wire exposed inside the oven. The insulation would have to take at least 500 degrees F. I am betting the gas grill ignitors have PVC insulation which would not hold up. Teflon insulation (used in mil spec wiring)might be OK or some other type of high-temperature insulated wire (used in electric range units). I'm not sure if you could replace the existing wire on the igniter easily or if they sell one with high-temp insulation. I have a spare igniter laying around somewhere and a bunch of teflon insulation so I am going to take a look.

  • After checking some hi-temp wire insulation it looks like teflon-coated wire (mil-spec) is OK to 392 dgrees F and hi-temp appliance wire is good to 482 degrees F.

The teflon wire is marginal and might work, but the appliance wire should be OK.

An appliance parts store might sell the wire by the foot.

  • My weber gas grill heats up to almost 600 degrees. The wire to the igniter does just fine.
So I went ahead and did this mod last year. Complete with the oven pilot igniter. A fantastic mod.
I bought one of the ones recommended in the thread, IIRC it was a Charbroil unit. I used the wires that were supplied, and with a little creativity made a bracket for the oven igniter.
  • I also used an igniter for a gas grill. I don't think the oven gets any hotter then a grill.
