More Duramax info

my truck has 121,000. what kind of preventative maintenance should I be doing. I change the trans filter every oil change. I work out of town do my truck sits a month at a time. I change the fuel filter ever 3 months. I've had extensive front end work, it drives like a new one. my concern are the fuel injectors. I feel like I need to buy a set to have on hand. been told my engine is the year that are hard to come by.

any help
thank you

The best way to determine the health of your fuel injectors is to check the balance rates between all 8 of them.

If you have an Android based phone you can do this yourself using the Torque app.

HRDDWN-Your Edge Evo will display injector balance rates

  • It's your money so you can change out whatever as often as you like. I've had my 05 for over two years and have changed my fuel filter 4 times and only have put 14k miles on it. Fuel filters are cheap and easy to change. Already did a trans oil change and my do it again in the next month. Again cheap and easy. As far as injectors, that's a******shoot. You may never need to change them or they'll go out tomorrow. Mine has 146k miles and on original injectors. But I have heard that the LB7 was more bad injector prone.
  • @whistle britches= I change my filters like that because my truck more or less sits 8-9months a year and only gets used to pull mostly. I'm probably over kill but I need this truck to last for another 8-10 years

@azwildcat99= the clunkiness can be fixed. it has to be done at the dealer. I had pitman arms, drag link, tie rod end, upper and lower steering Colum bushings changed out and upper and lower steering sector links replaces. also had the up bearing changes out. makes the truck ride like a new one. very pleased with the work. makes for a much better tow.
  • I'm not sure what injectors are hard to come by, haven't heard that one before. Aside from keeping the fuel clean and not tuning it there really isn't anything to worry about with the injectors. When they fail, they fail. Buy them when you need em, as it's not a side of the road job.

Here is the maintenance schedule I follow.

    Oil/Filter Change 7500 miles
    Fuel Filter Change 10000 miles
    Tranny Service 30000 miles
    Differential Service 30000 miles

Just out of curiosity, what front end work did you have done. I'd love to get my front end handling better as their is too much clunkiness.

    Thanks!
  • What year? The pre 04.5 trucks (lb7) ATE injectors. Somewhere in 06 they are said to have fixed the "pump rub" issue, but time will tell. All have issues with leaking tranny cooler lines (Allison to radiator to cooler to Allison). I am at 133k on my 07 classic, other then the cooler lines, rear transfer case seal (twice), and rear driveshaft ujoints the first 100k have been trouble free. Sence then it has been a turbo, front left wheel bearing, and alternator (it has been an expensive year). The AC seems to have a slow leak, I have to have it charged every year now.
  • Oh and we change the oil when our indicator tells us we need to and run synthethic, Mobile One diesel oil in it. The oil filter too. We have only changed the transmission fluid and filter once at 50,000 miles and thinking we need to do that again soon.
  • Good grief, we don't change our fuel filter that often, every 10,000 miles and some only every 15,000 miles. Ours has 101,200 miles on it, it is an 03 and we recently had an injector go out on a long trip. Replaced all 4 on the left side and are getting ready to do the right side now, because we're afraid to take another long trip without doing it. Several people on here have said, it's the fuel that burns dirty and sticks to the end of the injectors and causes them to stick open or shut. Ours stuck shut. There is a diesel additive you can buy and put in the fuel tank, called Diesel Extreme that is supposed to clean the injectors. It's made by Hot Shot. We haven't tried it yet, so don't know how it works. Someone else will probably have a different perspective on this.
