The payload with the regular cab versus the crew cab is based on more than actual weight for the trucks. The crew cab adds only about 200 lbs. as compared to the regular cab. The difference in payload ratings is the result of the calculations done by the manufacturer that subtract 150 lbs. per passenger seat. The actual frame, suspension, leaf packs, wheels and tires, etc. being the same will support the same amount of weight in the bed of the truck.
The factory provides a rating based on how the truck is configured when it leaves the factory. Owners can make modifications that either increase the payload with extra springs, better tires, better shocks, or reduce the safe payload capacity as with lifted or lowered trucks and fancy low profile rims and tires.
