Wow, what an entertaining thread.
I have only owned gassers, so I can't weigh in on the original question. Of course, it seems many of the posts have nothing to do with the original question.
Look, buy and drive what works for you.
Period.
There are new gassers that can EASILY outwork diesels from 10 years ago in most situations.
I don't care about longevity because we don't tend to keep cars or trucks more than three or four years before we trade them in on a new one. With that said, we gave my mother-in-law a 2006 Honda Accord that has over 200,000 miles on it and shows no signs of slowing down. I expect to easily get 350,000 miles or more out of that car (gasser, obviously). Shoot, we once put 400,000 miles on a Toyota Cressida (again, gasser, obviously) and sold it for $2,000. The buyer drove it away with no concerns or questions.
Sometimes the quality of build is more important than the type of engine.
Do you really think you'll get the same mileage out of a gasser tow vehicle?
By mileage are you talking MPG, or longevity? MPG, no. Longevity, yes. The modern gassers are proving to easily last as long as the smogged diesels.
When it come down to longevity on a vehicle that spends its life pulling a heavy load diesel will win vs. a gasser.
If we are talking daily drivers gasser are fine and there is little longevity inequality but if the engine is under load the entire time diesel wins.
Remember this is the tow vehicle forum not the commuter car forum
I know what forum this is.
The Ford F-650 I drove when I delivered propane had a 429 gas engine in it constantly spinning 4,000rpm. Many of those trucks were traded with 250,000mi so who knows what the end life was. The F-450 I currently drive had its 6.4L diesel replaced at 120,000mi.
There are many GM C-60 trucks with 427 gassers that live long lives delivering propane as well.
The 2004 F-450 I had that had a 6.0L diesel was junk at 150,000mi. I would be willing to bet it would have easily seen that many miles with a V-10.
Plenty of Chevy Kodiak trucks running 8.1L engines well over 250,000mi. Recently a guy on thedieselplace.com posted his 8.1 had over 500,000 working miles when it finally laid down.
I have btdt. I know a modern gasser will last as long as a diesel.
