mystery of the missing refrigerator shelf

Got our new TT home 10 days ago and have been gradually getting acquainted with it. It's too cold overnight to camp yet (temps still in the low 20s and teens), so we're just in the process of putting our stuff in it, adding a few small mods (towel rack, etc.) and figuring out where things will go in it.

We noticed today - not sure why we didn't notice earlier - that one shelf in our fridge is missing. We have a Dometic 6-cu-ft with separate freezer door, and it's identical to the one that was in the TT we traded in for this one. For those of you acquainted with this model, the shelf in question is the one located below the shelf with a "cutout" section in it, and above the one on top of the drawers. I contacted the dealer about it and was told that "all the Rockwoods" on their lot (a total of 8 currently, she said) came that way. Seems kind of fishy to me, and weird. After our last contact (this was by email), DH found the parts page from the fridge manual, and the missing shelf is shown there, with a part number, so it certainly seems that none of these campers should be missing the shelf, much less 8 (well, 9) of them.

Anyone else have the same problem?

  • This seems a common practice in the industry. When we bought our last TT 20 yrs ago, the salesman told me about the missing shelf in the Norcold fridge after we closed the deal. He could get me one from his parts dept for a fee if I wished. Since I was too easy on him during negotiation (read: sucker), he gave me one as a good will.
  • Good to know about the clips, Bob. Thanks, both of you!

First step, try to work through the dealer. We'll go from there.
  • Seems that all the new ones are coming with one less shelf. If you can get your dealer to order you one, jump for joy. If you call Dometic they want $60+ and $25 shipping for that one shelf! If you can find a picture in a current catalog that shows the extra shelf you may persuade them to send you one. I whine pretty well, and they sent me one.
You will need the clips as well.
  • That's interesting! I wondered if it was just the dealer - but perhaps not.
  • When we bought our camper five years ago, same problem. The old camper and new had the same fridge. DW said, "There's a shelf missing". We found a picture in a catalogue showing the fridge with shelves. The dealer agreed and ordered the missing shelf at no charge. Same fridge as yours, same shelf missing. There's little enough shelf room when they are all there to settle for one being left out.
