Need help winterizing

This is my first camper, a 2001 Fleetwood Mallard, and I need to have it winterized. I figured on saving the money and doing this myself, but I can't seem to access my hot water tank. It is right behind the oven and the breaker panel and I really can't see any way to get back there to either use my bypass or else install one. Has anybody heard of this before? I really don't want to fill the whole tank with anti-freeze, I would much prefer to just bypass the hot water tank but I don't see any way to get to it. Any advice is appreciated.
  • I have a 2002 Mallard probably the same or very similar to yours. My hot
water tank is under the stove and is acessed from under the sink. It didnot
have the bypass valves installed, had to install the bypass valves myself.
It was quite a project, with a lot of one handed operations as there is little
room to operate in,but is well worth the effort. I purchased the bypass kit from a RV repair shop.
    Hope this helps.
  • My water heater by-pass valve is on the opposite side of the MH from the water heater itself
  • It is definitely not the furnace, it is the water heater. I can see it underneath the stove, I just can't get to it. I already drained the water off from the outside, so I do know for sure that's what it is. I can't seem to post pictures, if I could it may clarify my situation. The way I see it, I could bypass the water heater to get to the kitchen sink, but that would be it without being able to access the line where it actually leaves the water tank to get to the rest of the trailer. All I can see is the pump and the line that leads back behind the oven to the water heater. From there, I can also see the line returning from the water heater to the kitchen sink. That is the only hot water line I can see.
  • If you can see the water heater's supply line for "a few feet" that should be adequate to install the bypass. You don't have to valve it right at the tank. Of course we are not at the scene nor do we know what you have for a bypass kit.
  • Not meaning to sound rude but is it actually the water heater under the oven or is that your furnace. I'm not sure what model your camper is but in all the pictures of Mallards that I see that is the furnace which is where a lot of furnaces are located. A little more info on what model your camper is would be very helpful. Tim
  • Not familiar with your TT but to access my hot water bypass I have to remove some screws and then remove a short luan board that allows access to the heater. My first TT many years ago didn't even have a bypass...I would try and follow the lines if possible.

Since this is your first time, it may be helpful to pay an RV Facility to do it (and show you) the first time.
  • Thanks for the replies guys. I pulled out all the drawers and went into all the cabinets, the only place I can't get to is right behind the oven which is right where the heater is. I have found the water pump under the kitchen sink, I can follow the water line a few feet until it goes behind the oven and breaker panel. I see the hot water line come up from behind where it disappears. The only thing I can imagine is that maybe I can access this from underneath. I've read a lot on this and watched some winterization youtube videos and I have yet to see a hot water tank that can't be accessed. It's a little frustrating, it just seems like there has to be a way to get to it without removing the oven.
  • What you should be hunting for is the water pump. Most travel trailers have the supply lines divided off to the water heater close to the pump. If you still have water in the tank, turn on a faucet and when the pump kicks on, search for it by sound.
  • Not actually familiar with your RV, but the bypass valves may not be directly behind the water heater. Suggest you pull out drawers, look for panels that can be unscrewed, etc.

A call to the RV manufacturer might help.
