Need new tires...help?

I am coming up on year 6 with my factory installed Goodyear Marathon tires. They still look great but I am worried about a blowout after reading about it all over the internet and the dangers of trailer tires over 5 years old. So after calling a bunch of local tire shops I have narrowed it down to a few choices. Opinions please.....which ones will be my best choice? My tire size is 205/75R14

Carlisle, Goodyear, Vitour, Towmax, or Autogrip

Thank you!

There are not many American made choices in my size. My only choice is Maxxis.
Maxxis 8008 are made in Thailand. I don't get xenophobic over country of origin. It makes sense to produce them close to the source of most of the natural rubber.

I chose Carlisle since I can replace one easily. I rebuilt my wheel wells with steel. Hope I don't need to test the durability.
  • I just replaced mine with Carlisles. It is difficult to find a 14" tire not made over seas. We were starting our sixth season with the original tires ( so called China bombs) and two weeks after returning from the Keys, and while parked in the RV garage it developed a large budge on the door side front tire.

I've read a 100+ posts about replacing them at four or five years, and now I am a firm believer!

Parked out of the sun light, routine tire pressure checks..........and I was lucky it seperated while parked, and not on the interstate two weeks prior!

    Good luck !

  • I just bought a set of Towmax load rated "D". They replaced a set of "C" rated, 7 year old, China bombs with 15,000 miles on them.

The last time I looked all low and mid price range tires were made in the Far East.

I am curious if there are any tires made in North America or western Europe.
  • I,d be in no rush, sounds like you did the maint on them. but stay away from china bombs ,they got that rep from being junk, some get lucky and think there great. .but one blows and does a few thousand dollars of damage to the under side. they,ll think again about buying them.I like michlins .
  • I got seven years out of my last set of Goodyear Marathons on our 8500~lb 5th wheel before I noticed a bulge in the tread. They had maybe 4k miles on them and I kept them covered. I think that was pretty good life out of any tire that sits for weeks at a time.
Out of necessity, I bought five Towmax E rated 15's. At two years and maybe 2k miles, they're still doing well.
we just ordered a Jayco 28RLS 8 weeks ago. I'm sure it will come with some obscure name Chinese tires. I'll check them often and run them 3-4 years and replace them with either Marathons or Carlisles.
Anyone tried Primewell ST E rated 15's yet sold at Firestone/Bridgestone outlets? I believe Primewell is their Chinese offering for cars, trucks and trailers. They look pretty meaty.

5 years old does not make the dangerous, neglect over the 5 years makes them dangerous.
Did you keep them inflated properly.
Did you cover when not in use.
Did you avoid pinching them on curbs etc.
Did you use the as intended and are not overweight on your trailer tires.

How far do you go a year?
    Local?
    Long distance?

If you took good care of the tires the should be good for a year or 2 more easy.

This TT is new to me. A 2010 Jayfeather 26'. The original owner kept them covered at all times, and traveled 10,000 miles with them over the 5 years. I just bought it last August and have gone camping about 4 times since. I stay locally mostly. Over the winter I covered them with black trash bags but now I have the appropriate covers on them. I made sure to inflate them when I picked them up from storage and will check them again when I tow next. I do not overload my TT.

  • I have used both Carlisle and GoodYear with no regrets. IMO the bull you hear about "china bombs" is just exactly that, internet bull.
  • It doesn't matter, those all come from China and China-made tires are never recommended. Try Maxxis instead.
