Hey there guys, we recently bought a 24' 1997 Vanguard travel trailer. Im new to the whole rv thing so I've come here for some intel on sealing repairs on the rubber roof. The trailer was owned by a freind and has been well taken care of,however he did point out a punky spot in the shower upper corner that I will tear into over the winter. My question really is about the Dicor self leveling lap sealer.I found a few spots (I will actually probably tackle the whole roof for peace of mind) that need sealing atttention. It would appear buddy used silicon in a couple spots and it barely help there's also the white stuff that kind of looks crusty. Whats the plan of attack when repairing this stuff. the penetrations I will just remove old, surface prep and use the Dicor but Im not sure what to do along the rain gutter and the entire edge of roof to aluminum flashing. Is Dicor the way to go? Is there better stuff on the market? A friend mentioned 3m marine adhesive/bedding 5200 but that stuff seems pretty permanentAny advice is welcome!Thanks guys

Eternabond tape is your long term friend. Search on it.

The only sealant that should ever be used on rubber roof is Dicor. Personally, I would remove what isn't Dicor, as well as any real aged Dicor if it is as bad as it sounds. In any case, Dicor every vent seam, roof seam, screw, etc.

Well, once the wood has been wet so long and is now soft, sure you can patch it after the fact with the best stuff on the market, but that ain't gonna fix the soft wood??Might buy you a few more years, but the damage is done and now it's up to you to decide if you wanna fix the structure or not$$$Good luck!Mitch

Any place that silicone has been used will need to be thoroughly cleaned, even the residue on the membrane, nothing will stick to cured silicone. For roofs, there is nothing that will beat Eternabond tapes, IMO. It is a lifetime fix for sealing anything. With even Dicor sealants, they will need to be renewed over time.

Use Eternabond on the roof seams and edges. Use Dicor where you can't use Eternabond.I'm very happy with Heng's Rubber Roof coating. Clean well before applying. No primer needed. It goes on easy and does a nice job.

I'm very happy with Heng's Rubber Roof coating. Clean well before applying. No primer needed. It goes on easy and does a nice job.

I concur and my roof is caulk free and has the full Eternabond treatment. It's now coming up on 10 years and I haven't had to touch anything on the roof and it looks like it can go another 10 years w/o worry or maintenance.

thanks for all the responses, Sounds like i'll be getting a couple rolls of eternabond and a tube or two of dicor.

As fas as the soft wood I found in the bathroom corner. Ill be taking the inside wall paneling out to asses. As far as wood repair goes I can handle all that myself provided I dont have to deal with removing any of the aluminium cladding. hopefully it can be solved from the inside out.

Ordered my supplies. Ive removed all the silicon and old dicor. Used a heat gun and scraper and that worked really well. I then cleaned the surfaces with some acetone. Is that about it for prep?

I was thinking of a light bead od dicor on the seams and then use the eternabond tape over that after a couple days to just guarantee the seal?

Correct and not sure if they still do, but Eternabond recommends a light bead of caulk on leading edges to prevent potential lifting of the edge when exposed to sustained wind. This potential issue is not that serious IMO, but can cause some edges to become "UGLY".

One has to understand that while the Eternabond "Micro sealant" is great it is flexible and will stretch and Eternabond normal tape is not good under tension ... the webseal is a little less prone to this issue from my understanding, but I have no experience with it.
