I had a TC that needed to be lifted also, but a 2x2 did the trick which I secured permanently to the bottom of the TC.
If you do add the 3.t to 4" I'd fasten it to the bottom also. You might make some drawer slides for extra storage.
Others have good points, but if you go with lifting TC, go for more storage!
